Vasai, also known as Bassein is a picturesque and calm place on the outskirts of Mumbai and is also referred to as mini Goa by many due to it's striking resemblance.
Among many other things, it's popularly known for one of its iconic monumental structure - The Vasai Fort, also known as Fort Bassein or Corte de Baçaim or Killa to this very day. It was built by the Portuguese in the 15th century to strengthen their naval base over the Arabian sea. Over the centuries, the fort has witnessed exchange of power under various monarchical regime such as the Portuguese, the Britishers and the Marathas and it has a significant history that dates back to the 15th century. Presently, it is under the management of Archaeological Survey of India. It's about 7.5 km from Vasai West Railway Station and takes approx. 20 minutes to reach from the station.
Bird's Eye View of Bassein Fort
As a monthly ritual, B.I.R.D. (Bacaim Invictus Road Disciples) had planned a breakfast ride to Vasai fort. This was preceded with a delectable breakfast at the 'Uptown Food Shack' - popularly known for scrumptious pizzas, pastas and much more - situated in the by lanes of Vasai towards Vasai Fort. In fact, the B.I.R.D. group members were specially invited for the Sunday breakfast by the Uptown Shack as the founder is a co-member of the B.I.R.D flock. As they say, "birds of a feather flock together." 😉
A delightful pizza joint with good ambience for all your pizza craving needs! It is a one-stop shop that serves a wide range of lip smacking pizzas and much more. Some of their signature dishes are Hot Chick Ball Pizzas and Tostadas along with many others.
Things to do in Vasai Fort:
Although the structure is in ruins to this present day, the fort is famous for the following things:
- Soaking in the moment and traversing back in time to the historical era.
- Photoshoots: People from all across Vasai and Mumbai visit this place to get some heritage clicks. The opening sequence of the famous 'Hymn for the Weekend' Video of Coldplay was shot here in 2016 along with many bollywood movies over the years.
- Visiting the Vasai docks because of its proximity.
